Jesuit Ruins
Located 250km from Iguassu Falls, the "Missions" region was the stage of a fascinating and sad period in Brazilian history. In the 17th century, the Jesuits founded the Guarani Republic which was an ill-fated attempt at a utopian society in South America.

The brutal politics of colonial Spain and Portugal destroyed the community. Visit the ruins of San Ignacio, which are amongst the most well preserved of the period and maintain baroque traits with stone sculptures. The communal houses, churches and building stand in harmony with the surrounding forest.
